April is National Safe Digging Month—Call Before You Dig!

Spring projects are in full swing, and whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence, or starting a landscaping project, safety starts with a simple step: call 811 before you dig.

Before any excavation, follow this simple Guide to Safe Digging:

  1. Mark your dig area in white paint.
  2. Two business days before you dig, call 811.
  3. Do not dig until all known utilities are marked.
  4. Maintain your marks.
  5. Determine the precise location of marked utilities by hand digging.
  6. Use hand tools when digging within 24 inches of either side of the marks.

Washington State law requires at least 2 full business days’ notice (but no more than 10) before digging—excluding weekends and holidays.

Taking a few extra steps can help prevent outages, costly repairs, and serious injuries.
